The Standard Visitor Visa remains the most commonly used short-term route for non-visa nationals coming to the UK for up to six months, whether to see family and friends, take a holiday, attend a conference or business meeting, receive private medical treatment or sit examinations.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the route, visitor visa refusals remain extremely common — often because applicants have misunderstood the rules around permitted activities, the genuine visitor test, maintenance and accommodation, or because previous immigration history raises questions in the mind of the entry clearance officer.
