Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — now formally referred to in the Immigration Rules as settlement — is the point at which a migrant becomes free of all immigration conditions and is entitled to live and work in the UK permanently without any further restriction.
Because the qualifying period depends on the specific route you are applying under, and because even very short absences from the UK, periods of unpaid leave or minor errors in tax or national insurance records can break a long-running application, careful planning and a well-documented case file are absolutely essential if you want your application to be approved first time.
Our ILR service begins with a detailed residence audit, cross-referencing your travel records against your existing grants of leave, payslips, P60s, tenancies and any other evidence of day-to-day life in the UK to confirm how much qualifying absence you have used and whether there are any issues with the continuity of your residence.
If we identify any problems — for example a gap in employment, an unremunerated period of time, or absences that approach or exceed the permitted maximums — we will advise you whether to defer the application, seek to remedy the issue, or prepare specific representations and supporting letters to explain the circumstances to UKVI and to demonstrate why discretion should be exercised favourably in your case.
Becoming a British citizen by way of naturalisation or registration is the final stage of the immigration journey for many people and unlocks the right to apply for a British passport, to vote in certain elections and to hold public office.
The eligibility rules for naturalisation are complex and overlapping. You must show the correct period of lawful residence in the UK, demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the English language and life in the UK, satisfy the good character requirement — which involves a wide-ranging review of your criminal, immigration and financial history — and in most cases also satisfy the two home secretary discretions relating to the period of time you have been physically present in the UK and the amount of time you have spent outside the country during the qualifying period.

We first confirm whether you meet all of the strict residence criteria and whether there are any character, financial or immigration history concerns that might need to be addressed or disclosed in the application, and we advise you on the strategic timing of the application so that you apply at the earliest lawful opportunity without being refused for being too early.
