ILR & British Citizenship

Make the UK your permanent home with expert settlement and citizenship guidance.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

ILR — also known as settlement — allows you to live and work in the UK without any immigration time restrictions. It is a major milestone and an important step towards British citizenship.

To qualify, you typically need continuous residence in the UK for a qualifying period (usually 5 years), a pass on the Life in the UK test, and evidence of meeting the English language requirement.

British Citizenship by Naturalisation

Once you have held ILR for 12 months (or 3 years if married to a British citizen), you may apply for naturalisation. British citizenship gives you the right to a British passport, the right to vote, and the ability to pass citizenship to your children.
